College Honors: Football captain 1958; played offensive guard and defensive tackle; named IU Most Valuable Player 1958; All-American 1958; Balfour Award recipient in 1958 "for bringing honor and distinction" to IU; participated in Gem Bowl, Blue-Gray Game, Senior Bowl, and 1959 Chicago Tribune College All-Star Game; in 1958, led IU to only winning season (5-3-1) between 1946 and 1967.
Professional Athletic Background: Second round draft pick of Detroit Lions, playing all 12 games as a rookie 1959; traded to St. Louis Cardinals for 1960 season; original member of Minnesota Vikings, playing there 1961 and 1962; member of the 1963 World Champion Chicago Bears; retired from the Bears in 1967; professional scout for the Bears after retirement until time of death.
Special Recognition: In 1960's was selected to IU's All-Time Greatest Football Team; a founder and past-president of the Indiana North-South High School All-Star Football Game; each year a player who has graduated from college and who played in the North-South Game is honored for his athletic achievements during his four years of college with the Mike Rabold Distinguished Player Award; inducted posthumously into the Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame 1976.
