2015 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

Congratulations to the 2015 Indiana Football Hall of Fame Scholarship winners!  They are PETER HELLWARTH, JONAH JERRILS, JOSHUA BRUNE, DAVID WALBRING, ZACHARY POTTER, and KYLE CASTNER.

Class 1A:  PETER HELLWARTH

High School: Hagerstown

Parents: Gregory and Elaine Hellwarth

Special Recognition: Class Salutatorian; Future Farmers of America, Secretary; HHS Academic Team.

Community Service: Assists with HHS registration; Fall Festival volunteer; Psi Iota Xi volunteer.

Scholastic Accomplishments: Ranked 2nd in class; Nation Honor Society, President; IFCA Region 8 Salutatorian Award; Indianapolis Colts Academic All-State; 2014 Scholastic Award winner; Academic All-TEC 2012-2014; Academic Honors Diploma; 4.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

Athletic Recognition: 3-year varsity football letterman; in 2014 - Honorable Mention AP All-State Offensive Lineman, Palladium-Item All-Area Offensive Line; Most Valuable Lineman, All-TEC, Team Captain; HHS Best Mental Attitude award 2011-2014 (first time won by a freshman); selected to IFHOF East team for East-West Football Classic; 4-year track and 2-year swimming varsity letterman.

Peter will study chemical engineering at Purdue University.

Class 2A:  JONAH JERRILS

High School: Alexandria-Monroe

Special Recognition: Active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, including FCA Acts of Kindness since 2010, and S.A.D.D.

Community Service: Served as a Community Center basketball coach for elementary children 2011-2015; has assisted with Kids Football Camp, Kids Basketball Camp, and Kids Baseball Camp for several years; Elks Christmas Food Drive and Angel Tree volunteer since 2010; Vacation Bible School volunteer since 2009.

Scholastic Accomplishments: Ranked 8th in class; Nation Honor Society; Presidential, Dean's, Honors, and Blythe Scholarships; Dane A. and Mary Louise Miller Merit Award; Academic Honors Diploma; 3.93 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

Athletic Recognition: 4-year football varsity letterman; in 2014 - AMHS Most Valuable Receiver, IFCA 1st Team All-State Wide Receiver, All-State Honorable Mention Wide Receiver; holds school record of longest TD; caught 33 passes for 775 yards and 14 TDs, most by any player in Class 2A in 2014; selected to IFHOF West team for East-West Football Classic; 4-year basketball and baseball varsity letterman.

Jonah will study pre-medicine/biology and play football at DePauw University.

Class 3A:  JOSHUA BRUNE

High School: Bellmont

Parents: Jim and Rhonda Brune

Special Recognition: Active in National Honor Society volunteer events, including assisting with 5K run at hospital.

Community Service: Involved with basketball, football, and baseball youth camps; volunteer for community fundraisers, cooking for elderly, and assisting CNAs in a nursing home; active in church youth group for a variety of events and fundraisers; works part-time mowing lawns and umpiring youth baseball.

Scholastic Accomplishments: Ranked 5th in class; National Honor Society; IHSAA Eugene A. Cato Scholarship; Academic All-State; WPTA Channel 21 Fort Wayne Student Athlete of the Year; Academic Honors Diploma; 4.25 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

Athletic Recognition: 4-year football varsity letterman at running back/slot and defensive back; in 2014 - Team Captain; Honorable Mention All-State running back; 2nd Team All-NHC running back; 4-year baseball and 2-year basketball varsity letterman.

Joshua will study pre-medicine and play football at University of Indianapolis.

Class 4A:  DAVID WALBRING

High School: New Prairie

Parents: Andy and Jodi Walbring

Special Recognition: Band first chair tuba, section leader, and vice-president; captain of state runner-up spell bowl team.

Community Service: Member of New Carlisle's Gleaners Service Organization which provides a variety of services within the community; 3-year volunteer for Join Hands Day.

Scholastic Accomplishments: Ranked 3rd in class; National Honor Society; Academic All-State in football and track; Class 4A Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award/Scholarship; Edward W. "Moose" Krause Chapter of National Football Foundation & Hall of Fame scholarship; Academic Honors Diploma; 4.25 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

Athletic Recognition: 3-year football varsity letterman on offensive/defensive line; in 2014 - Team Captain, AP All-State, All-Conference, All-Area; helped lead team to first ever state championship game and team state record of 6,084 total rushing yards; 3-year track and 2-year basketball varsity letterman.

David will study civil engineering and play football at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Class 5A:  ZACHARY D. POTTER

High School: Terre Haute North Vigo

Parents: Corey and Terri Potter

Coach: Chris Barrett

Special Recognition: 4-year KEY Club member; Knowledge Masters team; works with special needs classes at THNV.

Community Service: Serves meals and delivers food baskets for 14th and Chestnut, a community service club; volunteer for, among others, Toys forTots, Trick or Treat for needy, Deming Elementary Fall Festival; church youth volunteer; works in Youth Football Summer Camp program.

Scholastic Accomplishments: Ranked 51st in class; National Honor Society; All-Wabash Valley Academic Team; Central Indiana Chapter of National Football Foundation & Hall of Fame scholarship; Academic Honors Diploma; 3.769 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

Athletic Recognition: 4-year football varsity letterman as kick/punter; in 2014 - ranked nationally by Kohls, Chris Sailor, and Kornblue Kicking Schools, IFCA All-State punter, AP All-State Honorable Mention kicker, All-Indiana Conference 1st Team kicker/punter, selected for All-Wabash Valley and Region 6 All-Star Teams; holds 14 school kicking and punting records; 2-year track varsity letterman.

Zachary has accepted a full scholarship to play football for Army and will attend The United States Military Academy at West Point to study life science.

Class 6A:  KYLE CASTNER

High School: Ben Davis

Parents: Jeff and Patricia Castner

Coach: Mike Kirschner

Principal: Sandra L. Squire

Special Recognition: Assists with peer tutoring; volunteers for National Honor Society activities; recognized by teaching staff with "Mr. Giant" Award, a mental attitude recognition for leadership, academics, and character.

Community Service: Volunteers with Feed the Children program, feeding the homeless, Clean-up Indy, and a tornado clean-up program; as an individual challenged by diabetes, assists with youth diabetes awareness programs across the state.

Scholastic Accomplishments: Ranked 22nd in class; National Honor Society; Rival Series Scholarship; National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete; Academic All-State; Academic Honors Diploma; 3.95 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

Athletic Recognition: 4-year football varsity letterman at quarterback; in 2014 - Team Captain, IFCA Top 50 All-State, AP All-State, All-MIC Conference, All-Marion County, Indianapolis Star Super Team, nominated for Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year, named Class 6A Mr. Football for Quarterback, Griddy 6A Player of the Year.

Kyle will attend Columbia University to study actuarial science and play football.
